Raising my hand and saying I can do it, has been something I have done my whole life. What was different about that day, is the reality I had no clue how I was going to do it.
As I walked home I remember feeling that feeling in the pit of your stomach and that voice that says, “who do you think you are?” What were you thinking? You are going to make a total fool of yourself.
As soon as I got home I called my Dad. My Dad was my touchstone. He was the person I could always go too and knew he would have some sage advice to give me.
So when I called him, I said ” Dad, have you ever said you would do something and then as soon as it came out of your mouth thought to yourself, you have no idea what you are doing and if they find out you have no idea what you are doing you will total humiliate yourself?”
My Dad has been gone 20 years in May, but I can still remember his laugh and the answer that followed like it was yesterday. ” Every single day! ”
Every single day we get up and make the best choices we can at that given moment. To live a wholehearted life we must show up and step in to our lives with courage.
The ability to take risks even when it pushes us outside our comfort zone. We must learn to greet each challenge with compassion, knowing we will screw up, make mistakes and learn from them.
We reach out to those like my father who went before us and learn from those connections the life lessons that are waiting to be learned. I was blessed to have such a person in my Dad. I cherish those conversations for they help make me who I am today.
So today when that hand goes up and that voice begins to challenge me, I smile and hear my Dad’s voice, ” You Got This.”
